Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev was known for his charitable acts. In fact, no one left his house empty-handed. A woman came to his doorstep at noon on Friday. But he had no money left to give her.
“Here, take the candlesticks, they are gold-plated.”
The woman thanked him and left the house. Mrs. Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev passed the woman as she left the house; she realized what had happened. “Levi Yitzhak! You know those candlesticks are solid gold!”
“Solid gold?! What have I done?!”
Out the door he ran, calling “Wait, Wait!!”
He finally caught up with the woman, who by this time was looking around scared and clutching the candlesticks tightly.
“Wait, I did not know!
Those candlesticks are not gold-plated! They are solid gold!
Don’t sell them for cheap!!”
